What is Periodontal Disease?

Preventing Gum Disease

• Brush at least twice daily for two to three minutes. Be sure to cover areas along the gumline.
• Floss daily to prevent plaque and tartar buildup. If you’re having difficulties using traditional floss, try a floss holder.
• Use an antibacterial mouth rinse, but note that this isn’t a substitute to brushing or flossing.
• Adopt a healthy diet. Limit intake of starchy and sugary foods, and practice eating more fruits and vegetables.
• Avoid smoking as this can contribute to periodontal issues and oral cancer.
• Be aware of the medications you’re taking. Let your dentist know if they’re leaving your mouth dry.
• Stay up-to-date with your routine check-ups and dental cleaning appointments.

Gum Disease Treatments

Gum disease treatment (Periodontics) depends on the severity of the issue. Here are possible treatment options for patients:

• Deep cleaning. This procedure includes scaling and root planing to remove and contain bacteria below the gum line.
• Pocket reduction surgery. When you have gum disease, pockets where bacteria thrive may form around the teeth.
  These pockets have to be reduced to keep bacteria out.
• Gum graft. Receding gums can be saved by treating exposed tooth roots. Gum recession is a gradual process.
  Your dentist will let you know if you have it and when you need a gum graft.
