The need to take care of a baby’s oral health starts even before their first tooth comes in. Your baby may be incapable of eating solid food yet, but that doesn’t make them immune to dental issues. Here are tips to taking care of baby gums and teeth to ensure stellar oral health as they grow:

• Wipe your baby’s gums with a washcloth. Do this so they will get used to the practice of cleaning their mouth. Rub the damp cloth gently over their gums using your index fingers.
• Brush twice a day once their teeth start to come in.Baby’s first teeth usually come in at 6 months but can also take as long as 18 months. Once you notice a tooth starting to erupt, you may start with brushing. Make sure to use a toothbrush with a small head.
• Be gentle when brushing their teeth.Move the brush gently, covering all sides of your baby’s teeth. Try to brush their tongue too. When you can no longer clean all sides of their teeth with a toothbrush, you may start introducing them to flossing.
• Monitor the amount of toothpaste you use.Your baby can get fluoride for their developing teeth from the toothpaste you use. But be sure to use only a little amount until they learn how to spit water out. Fluoride can also be sourced from water and supplements. If your water supply isn’t fluoridated, you can always seek assistance from your dentist. You dentist will know whether it’s necessary to give your baby fluoride supplements.
• Take your baby to the dental office.You may visit the dentist once your baby’s first tooth comes in or after their first birthday. Either way, make sure to get their teeth checked by your dentist. Your dentist will check for any signs of poor dental health.
• Watch out for culprits of tooth decay.Fruits, peanut butter, and jelly are only some examples of food items that can cause tooth decay. While these foods offer nutritional value to your baby, they can also contribute to cavities if their mouth is not cleaned properly.  Make sure food residue is not left on their teeth for too long.
• Choose the right pacifier. Babies have the propensity to suck as this helps them calm down and relax. If your little one uses a pacifier, make sure it comes in a single piece and is large enough so they won’t swallow it. Eventually, help them to overcome their sucking habit. The sooner, the better. Otherwise, they may develop dental issues that may have long-lasting effects on their teeth.
