How to find the right toothbrush

How to find the right toothbrush

A toothbrush is your number one tool to keep your smile healthy.

It’s easy to fall for stylish or popular options. But before you purchase, ask yourself which type of toothbrush you’re most comfortable with.

Is there something that you didn’t like about your previous toothbrush? Does your hand easily feel tired when holding it? Do you wish the bristles were softer?

Here are some tips to help you find the right toothbrush.

  1. Look for a soft-bristled toothbrush. A soft-bristled toothbrush is gentler on the teeth and gums. It helps you brush more thoroughly without putting too much pressure on your teeth. Hard-bristled brushes and aggressive brushing can cause the enamel to erode and the gums to recede. This can expose the tooth nerves and heighten sensitivity.
  1. Choose a comfortable handle type. It’s hard to determine which type of toothbrush handle is most comfortable only by looking at photos online. Try to test toothbrush handles in person.[MY1]  Which one works best for you? You might want a non-slip handle so your toothbrush doesn’t easily fall out of your hand.
  1. Check the head size and shape. Toothbrush head sizes and shapes vary. Some are flat, domed, or trimmed. Check if your existing toothbrush fits comfortably inside your mouth to determine if you need a smaller or bigger head next time. See if your brush can target one to two teeth at once and reach all teeth with ease, especially the back molars. If you’re getting a child’s toothbrush, find toothbrush heads sized specifically for baby teeth.
  1. Consider electric toothbrushes. If you have conditions that limit your mobility, consider switching to a powered toothbrush. A manual toothbrush can perform as well as a powered toothbrush. But at the end of the day, it all depends on your physical ability and comfort level. An electric toothbrush is a great investment. If you’re wearing braces or any oral appliance, you may also find powered toothbrushes more convenient.
  1. Replace your toothbrush regularly. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or once it's starting to fray. A worn toothbrush won’t clean teeth effectively. Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush after an illness to prevent contamination.

If you’re undecided which toothbrush to choose, speak with your dentist in the Chinook area for recommendations. Aside from choosing the right type of toothbrush, it’s also crucial to ensure you’re brushing properly. Proper brushing technique allows you to enjoy the full benefits that your toothbrush has to offer.
